Dusty Locks and the Three Bears

Hello, Hello! I'm back and today I'm linking up with Ramona Recommends and her Traveling Picture Book Linky.

On our 47 day cross country road trip this summer (yep, 47 days, that's not a typo) I picked up a few great picture books that I can't wait to use this year. At Bryce Canyon National Park I found "Dusty Locks and the Three Bears" by Susan Lowell. I'm a sucker for a great fractured fairy tale and love using them with my first graders.

The characters in this tale are full pizzazz. All of the character details and illustrations will definitely keep the kids entertained. The girl's name is Dusty Locks because "she hadn't had a bath for a month of Sundays". Ha, I can just hear the kids' reactions now! I love how Dusty Locks is not very Goldie-she's full of spunk and dirt! You can really tie in cleanliness discussions here!

Like most fractured fairy tales, the teaching possibilities are endless....compare/contrast, making connections, character webs...the list goes on and on!

You can check out more info on Dusty Locks here on goodreads.

I can't wait to use this tale with my kiddos this year. I know they will love it! Personally, I'll be remembering my cross country trip and visit to Bryce Canyon every time I read this story...especially Red the Mule that took me down the canyon. Aren't books just the most perfect souvenirs?

If this post has sparked interest in my adventures at Bryce Canyon this summer (or any of the other 46 days) you can check them out here. Our traveling blog started a few summers ago just for our family, but we're always amazed at who becomes interested in our journeys! Nothing too special, just two teachers doing what we do best...having fun!

Be sure to check out the linky to see some other traveling picture books. There are still a few weeks left of summer to link up!
